Chapter Sixteen

Kaylyn said we’d leave in three hours. Just enough time to let the villagers get their few things together and do what we can to prepare for the trip. I insisted she and Jorrin get some rest. She’s running on such little sleep, with blood loss and a wound to top it off. Hopefully she’s not too upset that I didn’t wake her half an hour ago like she asked. I almost did, but she was so gone, I couldn’t bring myself to when we were doing everything that could be done. We need her strength when it’s time for her to lead. I can help give her that, at least.

Some of the villagers are trying to convince Foley to let them return to their houses, but he doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Frankly, I agree.

“What if that thing, whatever it was, that came before, is still out there?” I gently try to remind them. “We need to focus on getting away from it as a group. I know your things are important, but how will you feel if people die trying to retrieve them?”

When one of the villagers starts to reply, Tavo says in a kind voice, “I know it’s hard. Marsa knows it’s hard. Foley knows it’s hard. But you need to trust us. Trust her. Things out there are dangerous.”

“But if we leave it, we may never get it back.”

“A quilt my mother made. It’s the only thing I have to remember her by.”

My heart twists at that. If I was going to lose the only thing I have to remember my mother by, I’d want to get it as well.

Kaylyn strides toward us, eyes still heavy with sleep. The way she takes in the situation and straightens her back and shoulders, it’s clear she still sharp enough to get some idea of what’s taking place.

When she gets to me, she says in a voice for my ears alone, “What’s going on?”

“Some of the villagers want to get things from their houses. We told them they should leave their stuff behind. We don’t know what’s out there, and we don’t have time to get it.”

Her lips tighten, the way they do when she’s thinking. Only the way they’re pinched until they’ve have lost some of their color makes me wonder if she’s not just thinking but having something different in mind.

She turns toward the village members who’ve been begging to go. “You can go on three conditions. You move quickly. We are leaving in half an hour, no exceptions. You grab only what you can carry. Nobody else will be doing it for you. And you take one of us with you.”

This means we’re going to have to spend more time surrounded by darkness for things that are—well—just things. They may feel important, but the only thing that matters is staying alive and staying good. Even if I did have an object from my mom, I wouldn’t want to risk getting it as much as I’d want it.
